For balance, I’ll admit the poems aren’t quite as strong as the rest. Two of the stories that were later significantly revised in What We Talk About When We. This level of praise may have made Carver himself uncomfortable (unless he was already a few drinks in). A wide-ranging collection by the extravagantly versatile Raymond Carver. I forget Carver’s writing the same way I forget my organs, or blood. Recently, re-reading Fires, a collection of his essays, poetry and stories, published after the breakdown of his first marriage, it occurred to me – I forget, because his writing is so essential, that it’s impossible to remember its existence as a separate thing, written by a hand, on paper, rather than a component of my own self. It’s only later, when I glimpse his name on a spine on the shelf, searching for something else, that I guiltily recall. When asked about my favourite writers, I often forget him. Carver, in his raw brevity, cuts to the quick and reminds me with a shock every time why writing even matters. I generally dislike all that “favourite” malarkey, but then I open one of his collections, and am struck dumb. His wise observations and unvarnished candor reveal much about both human nature and animal suffering. Sewell wanted the reader to see the world from a horse's point of view and so Black Beauty tells his own story in these pages. With vivid detail and simple, yet lyrical prose, Black Beauty describes both the cruelty and kindness that an ebony-colored horse experiences through his lifetime - from the open pastures in the English countryside to the cobblestone grit of 19th-century England. Generations of children and adults have loved this book. NPR's Backseat Book Club is back! And we begin this round of reading adventures with a cherished classic: Black Beauty by Anna Sewell. Especially with the whole cast for the different characters, and their accent… It was gooooooooooood. This book is more character-driven than plot-driven, but I really liked all the characters (okay, most of them) so I didn’t mind at all. The audiobook with the different voice actors was great. Well, that was a quick, entertaining, and hot read. There is a quick pace, some humor, and good chemistry mixed with a lot of sexual tension. I admit that the general plot is not the most original, and it’s nothing we’ve never seen before in the paranormal RH category, but it was addictive and very entertaining. ❗️❗️Trigger warning: some violence, voyeurism, and some exhibitionismĤ.5 stars for my overall appreciation, but realistically, the plot would be more of a 3.5 or 4 stars. ✅ Academy setting that I actually enjoyed (and I am picky when it comes to academy settings)! 5/28/2023 0 Comments Prudence the custard protocolWith a few more novels, this delightful, Ms. " Changeless is equal to Soulless: witty, sexy, graceful, and unpredictable. Miller has 17 strikeouts across seven and two-thirds shutout innings this postseason, allowing three hits and two walks in his four appearances. The results have been staggering, even for a pitcher who was already well-regarded. Miller had never complained when the Yankees traded for Aroldis Chapman, bumping him from the closer role. When the Yankees traded Miller to Cleveland for prospects in July, the Indians knew they were getting a pitcher who could snuff out rallies at any point in a game.
